Insider guide

Shopping Silver Lake.

The story

Silver Lake and Los Feliz are neighbors, and their shopping is small and independent: design shops, records, LA-made clothing, independent bookstores and oddball gift shops. It suits browsers who like small stores, menswear, design objects and books.

In Silver Lake, the shops run along Sunset Blvd from Hoover St to Sunset Triangle Plaza, with side clusters on Glendale Blvd, N Hoover St and Rowena Ave. In Los Feliz, most shops are on Hillhurst Ave, with a second cluster on Vermont Ave south of Franklin Ave and a few on Hollywood Blvd near Vermont. Los Feliz's blocks are compact and best covered on foot.

What to Expect

On Sunset Blvd, Café Tropical (2900) has sold Cuban pastries since 1975, Buck Mason (3532) carries henleys, jeans and woven shirts, and Maison Louis Marie opened its largest boutique at 3920 in fall 2026, a short walk east of Sunset Junction, with botanical perfumes and candles. Off Sunset, Bar Keeper stocks glassware, bitters and vintage barware; Broome Street General Store runs two shops on Rowena Ave; OK sells Noguchi paper lamps, artist-made jewelry and design books; and Rockaway Records and Silverlake Wine share 2395 Glendale Blvd.

In Los Feliz, Skylight Books is built around a large ficus tree, and its Arts Annex next door at 1814 has graphic novels, comics and local zines. On Hillhurst Ave, Spitfire Girl (1939½) sells candles, ceramics and wooden cards, and Carol Young (1953½) designs and cuts her organic and recycled-fabric clothes in the studio behind the shop. On Hollywood Blvd, Ali Golden (4614) carries California-made women's clothing, and Wacko / Soap Plant (4633) is a curiosity store with what Discover LA calls the largest postcard collection in L.A.

Best Time to Visit

Few shops here post hours, so call ahead. Skylight Books is open daily 10am to 10pm, which makes it a good evening stop. Café Tropical keeps 6:30am to 5pm daily, and Buck Mason opens at 11am on weekdays and 10am on weekends. The Silver Lake Farmers' Market sets up at Sunset Triangle Plaza on Tuesdays from 1:30pm to 7pm and Saturdays from 8am to 1:30pm.

If You Only Have an Hour

Stay in Los Feliz. Start at Skylight Books and its Arts Annex next door, then walk to Wacko / Soap Plant and Ali Golden (4614). Finish on Hillhurst Ave at Spitfire Girl (1939½) and Carol Young (1953½).

Where to Eat

At Sunset Junction, Cafe Stella is a French bistro; order the steak au poivre and the sorbet served inside a frozen lemon. Pine & Crane, a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand a block off Sunset Junction, serves a beef roll in scallion pancake and wonton noodle soup. Josephine does duck-stuffed tortellini and steak frites, Night + Market Song serves larb with a natural wine list, and Kenbey Sushi has omakase and spicy tuna crispy rice. In Los Feliz, Little Dom's is a red-sauce Italian spot with red leather booths.
