Insider guide
Shopping The Grove.
The story
This district is two places side by side. The Original Farmers Market at 6333 W 3rd St, at Fairfax Ave, opened on July 14, 1934, when farmers sold produce from their trucks on the former Gilmore ranch. Rick Caruso's open-air Grove opened next door in 2002, with electric trolleys linking it to the market and a fountain designed by WET.
The Grove runs along The Grove Dr between Beverly Blvd and W 3rd St, and every shop shares the 189 The Grove Dr address. It is mostly brand stores: Nordstrom, Apple and Barnes & Noble as anchors, plus fashion, fragrance and beauty. The Farmers Market is food stalls, butchers and bakeries. Together they suit a mixed group, with something for shoppers, cooks and kids.
What to Expect
At The Grove, Nordstrom carries designer and contemporary fashion, shoes and beauty, with an eBar coffee counter inside. Barnes & Noble has a café, magazines, vinyl records and children's toys. For fashion there are Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Aritzia, Sandro and Maje, Vince, and PAIGE for Los Angeles denim; Todd Snyder is the menswear stop. Fragrance is a strength: Diptyque, Le Labo and Byredo all let you test the full range, and Charlotte Tilbury covers makeup. Arhaus sets up sofas and dining tables in room vignettes, and David Yurman sells its cable bracelets.
Then walk or ride over to the Farmers Market. Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Market (stall 150) has imported cheeses, charcuterie and wine. Marconda's Meats (stall 514) and Huntington Meats & Sausage (stall 350) are butcher counters, Du-par's Pie Shop (stall 211) sells pies by the slice or whole, and Michelina Artisan Boulanger (stall 316) bakes bread.
Best Time to Visit
The Grove is open Monday to Thursday 10am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday until 10pm, and Sunday 11am to 8pm. The Farmers Market opens earlier on weekdays, at 9am, and runs until 9pm, or 7pm on Sunday. The double-decker trolley runs daily from 1pm to 8:45pm, with a break from 3:45 to 5pm, so plan the crossing around it.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at Diptyque or Le Labo for a gift, then browse Barnes & Noble. Take the trolley to the Farmers Market, pick up cheese at Monsieur Marcel Gourmet Market (stall 150), and finish with a slice at Du-par's Pie Shop (stall 211).
Where to Eat
All of these are inside the Farmers Market. Du-par's Restaurant (stall 210) serves American comfort food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Gumbo Pot (stall 312) has gumbo, po'boys and beignets at the shared tables, and Singapore's Banana Leaf (stall 122) is one of the few places in Los Angeles cooking Singaporean food. Roxy & Jo's (stall 436) does grilled fish, oysters and lobster rolls. For a sit-down, Monsieur Marcel Bistro (stall 236) is a French bistro with a wine and cheese bar, and Ettore Vino & Cucina (stall 120) serves pasta.
