Insider guide
Shopping Abbot Kinney.
The story
Abbot Kinney is a mile-long Venice boulevard of independent boutiques, eyewear and fragrance shops, home stores and coffee bars, mixed with a few brand flagships. Developer Abbot Kinney opened Venice of America on July 4, 1905, after digging several miles of canals, and the street now carries his name. It suits a slow afternoon of browsing for design, beach-leaning fashion and gifts.
The shopping runs along Abbot Kinney Blvd from Main St to Venice Blvd, with a few shops just off it on California Ave and Westminster Ave. Street numbers climb as you head north, from The Cook's Garden at 1033 near the south end to The Tasting Kitchen at 1633 near the north end. Most of the shops we list sit between the 1300 and 1500 blocks.
What to Expect
At the south end, The Cook's Garden (1033) is an edible nursery selling herb and vegetable plants and kitchen goods, with gardening and cooking classes. Ahlem (1121) sells its own sunglasses and optical frames, designed in Venice and made in France. At 1138, Le Labo and Strange Invisible Perfumes share an address; the second makes organic, botanical fragrances and keeps an apothecary of oils and body products.
The 1300 block is the busiest stretch. Huset (1316½) does Scandinavian tableware and textiles, Hamilton Press Gallery (1317) shows fine art prints, Principessa (1323) sells beach-leaning dresses, John Fluevog Shoes (1327½) has bold boots and lace-ups, and Our Place (1344) puts its cookware out to handle before you buy. D.S. & Durga (1356) carries fragrances and candles, some sold only in its own shops. Burro (1409) is the gift shop. Then comes a tight cluster from 1502 to 1522: Tumbleweed & Dandelion for American-made custom furniture, Topdrawer for pens, notebooks and pouches, Aesop with sinks for trying hand washes, Made in Earth for gemstone jewelry, Guild for laid-back clothing, and Garrett Leight Optical. Near the north end, Shinola (1623) sells watches, leather goods and bicycles, and The Stronghold (1625) does selvage denim and leather jackets.
Best Time to Visit
None of the shops we list post hours, so call ahead for any stop that matters. Most open late morning and close early evening, which makes the afternoon the safe window. Once a month the boulevard holds a First Friday evening with food trucks; check the Abbot Kinney Blvd site for the next date.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start with coffee at Intelligentsia (1331). Walk a few doors to D.S. & Durga (1356), then on to Burro (1409) for a gift. Finish in the 1500 block at Aesop (1504½) and Garrett Leight Optical (1522), where the Modshop lets you customize frame colors and lenses.
Where to Eat
Gjelina, in the MICHELIN Guide's selection, sits mid-boulevard and is known for its vegetable dishes and wood-fired pizzas; book through SevenRooms. At the south end, Felix (1023) makes handmade pastas like tonnarelli cacio e pepe, and San Damian next door at 1025 does Mexican seafood such as rockfish ceviche with uni and shrimp aguachile. RVR (1305) serves clam ramen and pork belly gyoza, and The Tasting Kitchen (1633) is an Italian dinner spot near the north end.
