Insider guide
Shopping 3rd St Promenade.
The story
Third Street Promenade is Downtown Santa Monica's car-free shopping street. Three blocks of Third Street became a pedestrian mall in 1965, and after a redesign the renamed Promenade opened on September 16, 1989. It runs from Wilshire Blvd south to Broadway, where the Santa Monica Place mall carries on to Colorado Ave.
The Promenade is big-name brand stores: Apple, the Google Store, Zara, Uniqlo and Anthropologie, plus Barnes & Noble. Santa Monica Place adds fashion, jewelry and luggage, and a few more shops sit one block east on 4th St. It suits an easy walk, and the Santa Monica Pier, which opened in 1909, is nearby.
What to Expect
Coming from the north, Barnes & Noble (1318), which opened in August 2024, is the main general bookshop downtown. Zara (1338) is a large store for women's and men's fashion, and Patagonia sits one block east at 1344 4th St with gear for climbing, surfing and trail running. Farther south, Anthropologie (1402) has women's clothing, jewelry and home goods, Apple (1415) runs free workshops, Uniqlo (1431) is the larger store that opened in December 2025, and the Google Store (1460) lets you try Pixel phones and Nest devices before buying.
Inside Santa Monica Place, ALLSAINTS sells leather jackets and knitwear, Johnny Was has the LA brand's embroidered tunics and printed silk, and HUGO BOSS covers suits and tailoring. Brilliant Earth shows engagement rings you can try in person, and PANDORA helps you build a charm bracelet. Nike and Intimissimi round out the mall.
Best Time to Visit
Santa Monica Place is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm and Sunday 11am to 7pm. Promenade stores set their own hours, generally similar. Come on a Wednesday or Saturday to pair your visit with the Downtown Santa Monica Farmers Market.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at Barnes & Noble (1318), then walk south past Zara to Anthropologie (1402) and the Google Store (1460). Cross Broadway into Santa Monica Place and finish at Johnny Was or ALLSAINTS.
Where to Eat
Khan Saab Desi Craft Kitchen, just off the Promenade, serves Pakistani and Indian food; order the bhindi masala and lamb rogan josh. Elephante (1332 2nd St), a block away, is a rooftop Italian spot for whipped eggplant dip and vodka sauce pasta. Michael's (1147 3rd St), two blocks north of the Promenade, serves seasonal California cooking with a garden patio, and Resy takes reservations. For sandwiches and Italian groceries to take away, Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery is a few blocks east at 1517 Lincoln Blvd.
