Insider guide
Shopping Rodeo Drive.
The story
Rodeo Drive runs three blocks between Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, and it anchors the Golden Triangle, Beverly Hills' grid of flagship fashion houses, jewelers and watchmakers. Fred Hayman opened Giorgio Beverly Hills here in 1961, the street's first high-end boutique, and Gucci followed in 1968. Today the blocks hold Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Valentino and Tom Ford.
The shopping spills onto Dayton Way and Brighton Way, the side streets that cross Rodeo. Two Rodeo, a cobbled Spanish-style lane at 9480 Dayton Way, sits at the Wilshire end, and Neiman Marcus holds the south edge of the Golden Triangle on Wilshire. It suits serious luxury shoppers and window-shoppers alike.
What to Expect
Start at the Wilshire end. Vilebrequin sells printed swim trunks. The 200 block of Rodeo is the Two Rodeo corner: Breitling (216) for Navitimer and Superocean watches, Golden Goose (238) with in-store customization of its distressed sneakers, Versace (240), Dolce & Gabbana (248), Persol (256) for folding and arrow-hinge sunglasses, and Breguet (280).
Van Cleef & Arpels holds the corner of Dayton Way at 300 with Alhambra pieces and high jewelry, and Burberry (301) faces it with trench coats and check scarves. Bottega Veneta (320), Valentino (324), Saint Laurent (326) and Tom Ford (346) line up on one side, with Ferragamo (357) for leather shoes and loafers across the street. Hublot (9470) and Wolford (9511) sit on Brighton Way. The 400 block brings Louis Vuitton Men's (420), Hermès (434) for silk scarves and equestrian pieces, Panerai (441), Max Mara (451) for camel-hair coats and Alexander McQueen (457). At the north end, Saint Laurent Rive Droite (469) is a concept store of books, records, design objects and limited collaborations.
Best Time to Visit
Boutiques generally open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. Several flagships, including Hermès, Saint Laurent, Burberry and Louis Vuitton Men's, stay open to 7pm. Skip Tuesday for the big names: Hermès closes at 3pm, Panerai at 4pm and Tom Ford at 5pm. Sunday is the thinnest day. Breguet and Saint Laurent Rive Droite are closed, and Ferragamo and Vilebrequin don't post Sunday hours, so call ahead.
If You Only Have an Hour
Park in the city garage at 9510 Brighton Way, where the first two hours are free. Walk up to Hermès, then Max Mara and Alexander McQueen a few doors north. Head back south to Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta on the 300 block, and finish at Van Cleef & Arpels on the corner of Dayton Way.
Where to Eat
Spago, a block from Rodeo, is the big dinner, known for its smoked salmon pizza and spicy tuna cones; book through SevenRooms. For lunch between shops, Nate 'n Al Delicatessen does bagel and lox and stuffed cabbage, and The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills makes ciabatta sandwiches to go. The Grill on the Alley is steps from Rodeo, where regulars order chicken piccata. Il Pastaio centers on pasta and ossobuco, and Sushi Note Omakase serves a 20-course sushi menu booked through Tock.
