Insider guide
Shopping Malibu.
The story
Malibu's shopping sits on one short road just off Pacific Coast Hwy. Cross Creek Rd holds the Malibu Country Mart, at 3835 and 3900 Cross Creek Rd with frontage on Civic Center Way, and the Malibu Lumber Yard at 3939. Fred Segal bought the Mart's land in 1975 with the idea of bringing high-end fashion to Malibu.
The Mart mixes designer stores like Chrome Hearts and Oliver Peoples with easy beach clothing from Faherty, Outerknown and Bleusalt, plus home goods, a toy shop and a surf shop. The Lumber Yard adds Maxfield and James Perse. It suits a slow afternoon after the drive up the coast, with a market for picnic supplies on the way to the sand.
What to Expect
The 3835 building has the most shops. For men, Double RL & Co. sells vintage-inspired denim and Western shirts, and John Varvatos has rock-leaning suits and leather jackets. Chrome Hearts carries its sterling silver jewelry and leather goods. L'AGENCE does silk blouses and tailored blazers, Vince. has neutral knitwear, and gorjana sells layerable gold jewelry. For the house, CB2 shows modern furniture and lighting and Alicia Adams Alpaca has throws and blankets. Families can split up between Toy Crazy and The Bunker Surf & Skate, which carries boards and wetsuits. K Chocolatier by Diane Krön sells handmade truffles.
At 3900, Oliver Peoples (#8) sells handcrafted frames and sunglasses made in limited quantities, and Magnolia Pearl (Suite 2) has patchwork bohemian clothing in hand-dyed fabrics. Crown, on the Civic Center Way side at 23410, carries Brazeau Tricot knitwear in cashmere and silk. Finish at the Lumber Yard for Maxfield's designer clothing and James Perse's soft cotton tees.
Best Time to Visit
Posted hours run about 10am or 11am to 6pm daily. Magnolia Pearl opens at 10am every day, and Oliver Peoples opens at 10am on Saturday and 11am the rest of the week. Crown keeps 11am to 6pm daily and also opens by appointment outside those hours.
If You Only Have an Hour
Get a coffee at Alfred Coffee in the 3835 building, then walk to Oliver Peoples and Magnolia Pearl at 3900. Stop at Crown on Civic Center Way, and end at Maxfield in the Lumber Yard.
Where to Eat
Casita Basqueria is the easy lunch stop, with daily-changing bocadillo sandwiches and lattes. Lucky's Malibu, a steakhouse, and Tra Di Noi, for gnocchi with veal ragu and lasagna, are both at 3835 Cross Creek Rd. On Civic Center Way, Taverna Tony (23410) serves grilled octopus and whole branzino, and Clark's Oyster Bar (23465) does oyster platters and rockfish ceviche. Nobu Malibu is a short drive west; order the rock shrimp tempura and book on OpenTable.
