Insider guide
Shopping WeHo & Melrose.
The story
West Hollywood's shopping runs along three streets rather than one. Melrose Ave carries it from La Brea Ave west to Doheny Dr, with Melrose Place tucked into the 8400 block. Beverly Blvd and Robertson Blvd west of La Cienega make up the Design District, and the Sunset Strip runs from Crescent Heights Blvd to Doheny Dr. César Pelli's blue-glass Pacific Design Center, nicknamed the Blue Whale, opened here in 1975.
East Melrose leans toward resale and vintage, with Crossroads Trading and the Sunday Melrose Trading Post. Melrose Place holds KHAITE, Violet Grey and Santa Maria Novella. West of La Cienega, Melrose fills with designer and LA labels like Maxfield, Jenni Kayne and Acne Studios, and Sunset is the streetwear and books stretch. It suits fashion shoppers, sneaker hunters and anyone furnishing a home.
What to Expect
Start east at Crossroads Trading, which buys and sells secondhand designer and mall-brand clothing. Reformation sells its dresses, denim and knits just west of Fairfax, and Double RL (8150) has heritage denim and Western-inspired menswear plus an antiques department. KHAITE's ivy-covered flagship sits at 8409 Melrose Ave, at the corner of Melrose Place, where STAUD (8409) does sculptural handbags and Violet Grey (8452) has a makeup studio.
Past La Cienega, Glossier (8523), BAPE (8575) and Sporty & Rich (8619) lead into the 8800 and 8900 blocks: Jenni Kayne (8810) for California womenswear and home, Maxfield (8825) for new collections mixed with luxury consignment and art, then Madhappy, James Perse, and Acne Studios with Byredo at 8920. On Robertson, Chrome Hearts (600 N) sells gothic sterling silver; on Beverly, Leica Store & Gallery (8783) shows cameras and exhibitions. Up on Sunset, Kith and The RealReal share 8500, SKIMS is at 8569, and Book Soup (8818) stocks over 60,000 titles.
Best Time to Visit
Most shops open around 10 or 11am and close between 6 and 8pm, with shorter Sunday hours. Crossroads stays open until 8pm Monday to Saturday. Sunday is the day for the Melrose Trading Post, when about 250 vendors fill the Fairfax High lot from 9am to 5pm, rain or shine, for a $2 entry. Sunday hours run short on Melrose Place, though: Violet Grey closes at 4pm and KHAITE at 5pm. Waring Ave's free parking is off-limits Monday mornings.
If You Only Have an Hour
Stay on Melrose Place. Start at KHAITE for pieces sold only there, then walk in to STAUD and Santa Maria Novella (8411) for Florentine soaps and perfumes. Get a coffee at Alfred (8428), and finish at Violet Grey (8452).
Where to Eat
Pink's Hot Dogs anchors the east end and stays open late, with chili dogs. On Melrose, Gracias Madre (8905) is plant-based Mexican with cashew cheese and an afternoon happy hour, and Alba (8451), near La Cienega, is the place for truffle agnolotti. Darling by Sean Brock serves wood-fired seafood and a limited number of dry-aged burgers each night. On the Strip, Saltie Girl does fried lobster and waffles, and Night + Market serves heavily spiced Northern Thai food.
